Governing AI inside NHS-facing clinical workflows.
When HBSUK and Hexaware set out to rebuild clinician onboarding around AI, one question mattered as much as the technology itself: how do you prove the AI is used responsibly in a regulated healthcare environment? Axonyx is the answer they built in.
Customer
HBSUK - UK healthcare services provider, founded 2012, part of AXA Health since 2024. Works with the NHS and private providers to increase clinical capacity.
The platform
AI-enabled clinician onboarding and workforce management, built with Hexaware on Journey36’s App36 cloud platform.
The AI estate
Multiple large language models working across credential verification and onboarding workflows - a genuinely multi-model environment.
The Axonyx role
The independent AI governance layer: live oversight, runtime policy enforcement and audit-ready evidence across the platform’s AI activity.
Clinical capacity is a national problem
With more than seven million people awaiting treatment, the NHS needs clinicians deployed faster. But clinician onboarding is a compliance-heavy process: credentials must be verified, regulatory standards met and every decision accounted for.
HBSUK’s answer, built with Hexaware, was to digitise the fragmented recruitment and onboarding journey on a single AI-enabled platform. Multiple large language models accelerate credential verification and reduce manual steps - so healthcare providers can respond to patient demand faster.
That created a new requirement. AI operating inside healthcare workforce workflows - handling professional credentials and personal data, in a business owned by a major insurer - cannot be a black box. It needs governance that works at the speed the platform does.
AI adoption that had to be provable from day one
The platform’s AI estate is exactly the fragmented reality most enterprises now face: several models, from several providers, embedded in live operational workflows. Policy documents alone cannot govern that. HBSUK needed to know what the AI was doing, control it in real time and evidence responsible use - for internal assurance, for AXA Health, and for the regulated healthcare environment it operates in.
Axonyx as the platform’s AI control layer
Live oversight
AI activity across the platform’s models is observable in one place - which models are used, for what, by which workflows.
Runtime enforcement
Prompts and responses are inspected as they happen. Sensitive data controls and usage policies are applied before risk becomes incident - not discovered in review.
Multi-model governance
One consistent policy and control layer across every LLM the platform uses, independent of any single provider.
Audit-ready evidence
Policy actions, risk events and AI decisions are captured as they happen - the record that lets a regulated business say “responsibly and compliantly” and show it.
Governance that moved at delivery speed
The partnership delivered significantly faster development and testing cycles than traditional methods - with AI governance built in from the start rather than retrofitted after go-live. Onboarding is faster, the platform keeps evolving (rota management, payment reconciliation and contact-centre capabilities are on the roadmap), and every step of AI adoption stays visible, controlled and evidenced.
That is the Axonyx thesis in practice: regulated organisations do not have to choose between adopting AI quickly and adopting it safely.
“Healthcare is exactly where AI governance has to be real. HBSUK’s platform shows what that looks like: AI accelerating a critical national workflow, with oversight, enforcement and evidence running live underneath it.”
